Welcome to my first blog post!
I've been wanting to start a blog for a while now, but to be honest with you I was a litttttle nervous. Maybe because I've always been more of an artist than a writer? Maybe because I wasn't exactly sure how? Either way here we are, we've done it, we're happy about it, we're going to stick with it and we're going to have fun with it. I have lots of ideas about where I want to take this blog! I expect it will be a mix of photos, videos, fun stories, tips and tricks for family sessions, tips and tricks for other types of portrait sessions & and we'll see where it goes from there! Literally, just as I'm writing this right now, I'm getting so many ideas and I really can't wait to see where this goes! Do people still read blogs? I hope they do because I'm really freaking excited about it.
I thought maybe for the first one I could talk a little bit about me?
Yeah? Okay awesome :)
I started this whole photography thing, I believe in 2018. My papa has been the photographer of our family since before my mom was even born. I have so many photos of myself growing up, my cousins, my little sister, and everybody else in my family because of him and I'm so grateful for that. Seriously, you should see his house, you would be amazed at the amount of photo albums he has and the amount of photos on the walls, on the floor in piles, in boxes it's pretty crazy. In a good way. I will strive for my house to look like that when I have a family of my own. Anyway I started in 2018 because my papa had given me one of his old cameras. I immediately went out with my cousin and we walked around the neighbourhood and I took photos of her. I'll insert a few of them here because they are a little bit ridiculous.
From there I became the photographer friend in high school, my first models were my best friends. Pro- tip, when you're learning about photography and about how your camera works it's really helpful to have beautiful friends that will model for you. I'll insert a few of those as well.
Actually, the reason I have so many posts on Instagram is because I've been posting since I started photography, so if you are curious to see the evolution of my work….it’s all on display on my account lol. @lilykyddphotography.jpg Once I was out of high school I became an assistant manager at a photo studio in Guelph, ON. That's where I found my love of family photography. And that's when I started this whole shabang.
Dear moms, get in the dang photos!
Through my time as a family photographer there was one thing I heard a lot from the mothers of the families I was photographing. And that was the fact that they spend a lot of time taking pictures of their whole family, and one day they sat back and realised that they are not in any of them. And that really stuck with me. For a couple of reasons, one of them being that I just really think that's no good. I cherish the photos I have with my parents and I when I was younger. I'm so glad I have them and I have so many of them because my papa would take them. And that's another reason why this resonates with me so much is because I have some photos of myself with Papa but most of the time he is the person behind the camera. When I started getting into photography I made sure to take more of him, whether he liked it or not, haha!
I ended up focusing my business around that fact. I wanted the moms that came to my website (because let's be honest, it’s usually mom that's booking the photo sessions) to feel heard and understood and I wanted them to realise how important it is to get out from behind the camera and to get into those photos with their kids. Whether that’s from handing your phone to Dad more often or even booking a photo session. To this day, I still have my clients telling me how few photos they have with their kids, and I'm so grateful that I am the one that can help change that.
